• The X-6.5SW is our first true sub-woofer smaller than 8 inches in diameter. We spent many hours of design time, simulation time, and prototype testing to cram this much clean bass into a tiny 6.5” subwoofer with a mere 4” of mounting depth! This little titan features a voice coil identical in winding dimensions to our SA-8 v.3 subwoofer (a massive 2” diameter coil with a 1.4” winding height) so thermal power handling is absolutely massive.

In order to create the full package we tooled up a completely custom cast aluminum frame featuring a unique “spiral cut” venting technique in its base. This frame allows us 2” of peak-to-peak mechanical excursion capacity which is well beyond the 16mm one-way linear excursion (1.25” p-p) of the motor & coil design. This means the X-6.5SW is not designed NOT to bottom out even on the most demanding dynamic music passages making this subwoofer extremely clean up until the very limits of mechanical capacity.

Of course; it isn’t so simple when cramming this much excursion into such a small package. Our goals also required a fully custom tooled flat aluminum diaphragm. The advantage compared to a regular cone is that we can be sure the cone will not hit the spider up until the very highest levels of travel thus allowing more linear excursion before mechanically induced distortion sets in. The flat diaphragm meets up to a very large rubber surround which is, in turn, complimented by a custom tooled high-excursion spider pack with integrated tinsel leads.

All of this would have satisfied most anyone else but we took it one step further and included a copper shorting cap on the pole of the X-6.5SW. This cap reduces inductance induced distortion & actually allows this little monster to play up to ~200-500 Hz without an issues if your application calls for it. This is a truly premium 6.5” subwoofer.

These woofers are optimized for small PORTED enclosures of 0.25-0.33 ft^3 volume. They are not suggested for sealed enclosures or large enclosures of any kind. Please keep this in mind.

    Features & Technology:

    • Xmax = 16mm one-way by 70% BL
    • RMS Power = 300-watts
    • * Note on Power Handling: This woofer is mechanically limited. It requires a SMALL ported enclosure. Placing it in a large enclosure will reduce mechanical power handling substantially.
    • Large noise-free pole vent design
    • Specially designed spiral-cut basket venting technique (unique to this model in our line)
    • 2” diameter 4-Layer CCAW wire voice coil wound on thick Kapton former
    • Copper Pole-Cap For Reduced Inductive Distortion
    • Integrated Tinsel Leads to prevent lead slapping
    • Proprietary flat aluminum diaphragm
  • The Sundown X-8, along with all other 8s in our line, is a unique driver within its line-up. Contrary to the design of the other X subwoofers the X-8 is more of an SPL oriented subwoofer. The X-8 suspension design (spider & surround) were designed around creating larger peaks for SPL purposes. It is built on our patented 8” subwoofer frame (US Patent D691595) just like the SA-8 v.3 so it shares the same massive mechanical clearances (2.5” p-p allowable).

For the X-8 v.2 we removed the vented spacer ring as we did on the SA-8 v.3 and added the same high-velocity vent-holes around the frame base below the spider. This allowed us to reduce the mounting depth a bit to expand installation options. We also added a series of machined channels down the full height of the pole to increase air based cooling and also to reduce audible air velocity though the motor.

The spider is a unique, progressive roll unit two layers thick. This spider was heavily FEA optimized to do the trick job of allowing large excursion capacity with a 2.5” coil on an eight inch subwoofer. The surround features a geometry very similar to the “SPL” cone options on our large woofers in a bit smaller size to suit the excursion capacity of this woofer. Both parts of the suspension support levels of excursion in excess of the linear limits of the motor & coil design.

While the X-8 is more of an SPL optimized woofer it does feature the highest linear x-max of any 8” in our line at a full 19mm one-way. It also features a very thick magnet ID shorting ring just like the SA-8 v.3 as well so will enjoy the same benefit of lowered inductive distortion. Make no mistake, the X-8 is still a very clean sounding subwoofer.

If the sound of the SA-8 is too smooth for you – meaning you want a more aggressive & punchy sound – then the X-8 is the woofer for you. If you want the highest SPL output from any 8” woofer in our line – then the X-8 is, once again, the woofer for you.

    Features & Technology:

    • Xmax = 19mm one-way by 70% BL
    • RMS Power = 750-watts
    • Solid Pole piece with chamfered edges & machined air channels for increased voice coil cooling

  • The X v.2 series is the first driver in the Sundown woofer line-up to offer our "ultra-high excursion" suspension and frame designs. The 10, 12, and 15" models feature our custom tooled and patented frames (US Patent Numbers D691596, D691597, and D691598) and the 18" model uses the tried and true 18" 6-spoke with a custom tooled adapter to allow for a full 10" diameter spider. Optionally our custom tooled 18” frame is available for an extra charge (US Patent Number D741841) – this frame utilizes an 11” spider & changes the coil configuration availability changes to D1 & D2.

We mate these new platforms to a triple stacked 220mm (8.66”) diameter motor structure featuring a hyper-extended pole and extreme clearances (allowing up to 4" p-p travel before mechanical bottom). This motor drives a 3" diameter 4-layer CCAW coil wound on a thick aluminum former to incredible levels of excursion. For the v.2 revision we upgraded the coil to a new “black coil” design which handles significantly more heat than the coil form the X v.1 series.

The X v.2 series was designed from the ground-up to become the new standard in the low-frequency / small ported box subwoofer category in this price range. They will work in the same small enclosures that you are used to using for Sundown Audio subwoofers, although, the will tolerate enclosures up to about 50% larger than those if you desire even more low-end extension.

The X v.2 series is really a different kind of woofer due to its incredibly linear suspension. They are designed for the LOWEST level of bass extension possible in a small enclosure while maintaining extremely low levels of distortion.

One of the most obvious changes from the v.1 series is the much larger motor structure (220mm vs. 190mm on the v.1 series). The motor ventilation has also been improved and we also upgraded to the all-new Mega-Roll v.2 surround which is a more linear & more rugged update to our world-famous Mega-Roll v.1 surround design.

CUSTOM TOOLED BASKETS (10/12/15/18” Sizes)

Our proprietary 10/12/15/18" baskets (US Patent Numbers D691596, D691597, D691598, and D741841) were originally designed and tooled up in 2012 (2014 for the 18" model) in order to create what we call the "new platform" for Sundown subwoofers. We were not satisfied with the industry standard baskets when it comes to our high-end woofers (X series and higher) so we became the first "niche" company to design & tool our own entire series of ultra-high excursion baskets.

The new baskets were originally accompanied by the Mega-Roll v.1 surround technology in 2012 and followed up with the improved Mega-Roll v.2 surround technology in 2015 in order to push the boundaries of linear excursion capacity enabled by the new baskets. The new platform frames all support at least 4" p-p stroke (as much as 6" on the 18" model) so they were designed from the ground-up to be ready for the future of high linear excursion. Each basket also supports a much wider spider than the industry-standard sizes to compliment the Mega-Roll surrounds.

Our Sundown baskets were also tooled to be the strongest baskets ever created in order to support monstrous motors like the Team Sundown. The 18" model is a full 10 pounds of cast aluminum! They were also tooled with a "solid base" design (meaning no integrated venting) to mate with our specially designed venting rings. It is actually more expensive to make a basket this way since it uses more aluminum but our vent ring technique is much more effective than wide-open venting. The solid base also ensures the maximum level of structural integrity in this area.
